“Choose a job you love and you will never have to work a day in your life.”
This is a fantastic concept, but very difficult to achieve for most of
us. Even if you love your job and what you do, the day to day monotony
can make your job “work”. Everyone can agree that companies are asking
more and more out of their employees, and even on a day off, you still check
your emails and take phone calls, that is just the world we are in.
I am lucky, I have a
fun job and I truly love what I do. But, I do have to remind myself once
in a while to have a little more fun. My office overlooks our racetrack
and I can see the horses run in the summer, but most of the time my back is turned
doing work instead. I had to put up a sign next to my computer screen to
remind myself to turn around and enjoy what I do. I keep a nerf gun at my
desk, so if I feel the cube world I live in becoming too serious, I will start
a little battle. I even bought co-workers some guns for the same
reason. This helps not only breakup the day of work, but reminds each of
us to have a little fun.
Having fun is
infectious, it helps make each work day more enjoyable and also gives everyone
a chance to bond and build a better relationship. I can tell when I start
having more fun everyone else around me does the same and will share a smile as
they are doing their work. I have a different work environment that
breeds fun, so it may be a little easier for me to go on the gaming floor,
listen to a concert or walk down to the Halloween event, but it is still
possible for everyone to have more fun at work.
For that copier that
is always broken, put up a sign that the printer is renamed to Bob Markey
because it’s always Jamin.
Bring in a board game
or cribbage board and put a challenge out to the employees to play during
Change the name plates
or add paper nameplates to people in your office.
Challenge someone to a
distance shot of throwing paper into the garbage.
The little things that
only take a few minutes can make your 8-12 hour day a little more fun and help
you look forward to the work you do and people you work with.
