In our current technological society where the work day seemingly never ends with 24-7 access, it's important to take a few steps back and remember to make time for and nurture those relationships you value most. It's not the quantity of relationships you have that should count most, rather the quality of them. Those in which each party equally gives and receives.
Striving for a work/life balance doesn't really exist in my book - you just do the best that you can with what you have and make each moment count. Remember to invest in referral sources and clients that value your time and expertise as much as you value theirs. Phone calls, lunches, and handwritten thank you's, go a long way to solidify those relationships. Spend your time wisely by being a part of those organizations that recognize the value of your contributions, and that you value theirs.
Be aware of the significance of quality time with family and friends; it's essential that you be present and not distracted by work or other stresses. Unfortunately I've been reminded much too often lately that life really is too short, and you simply must make the time to spend with your inner circle. Go on that vacation, schedule that girls' weekend or dinner date, and during this time of year for us Minnesotan's specifically, GO FIND THE SUN!
It's also important to remember to take time for yourself. In trying to be everything to everyone you can lose what makes you, “you.” In order to operate at your best, you need optimal mind and body health. Carve out time each day to do something that makes you happy. For me it's some quiet time in front of my fireplace with a fabulous cup of coffee.
